Holy shit, why is there not more of this out there? Prepare your groove pants for the greatness of Ann Arbor's Mayer Hawthorne, a sometimes blues-y, sometimes funky, but always soulful album that probably belongs more fittingly in 1966 rather than 2009. Very few records get me as excited as this one did, or as disappointed that there are only been 2 songs released.
Mayer Hawthorne - Just Ain't Gonna Work Out (video)
Mayer Hawthorne - When I Said Goodbye (video)
Well Paulina, you did it again- another nice selection. Somehow, I wouldn't pick you as a sappy doo-wop kinda guy, but this is good stuff. From the picture above, I had much of a G-Love feeling before I heard the music... not that it's a bad thing.
Yes, does sound very 1960's. If there had been some vinyl crackle added to the song to go with the video of the record spinning, it'd been perfect.
Both tunes have that great swooning, melancholy that is both depressing and inspiring at the same time. Something about the agony of love that reminds us that love is such a beautifully savage thing.
