I normally wouldn't do this, but I'm particularly giddy
about this girl.
I've made some bold predictions about bands blowing up before, and have since
realized it's a better idea to bite my tongue. There are lots of good
bands, and it takes more than just talent to reach some higher echelon.
But then, last night I saw St. Vincent, the first of the Tune In features, and moniker of solo songstress Annie Clark, a fellow Dallasite and former classmate of yours truly.
And, mark my words, book it, and hold me to it, 2007 will be her year. Look out Fiona, there's a new lady crooner on the way, and all you MTVers, keep your sets tuned and ready.
She's simply amazing.
And, Mack, maybe 100 cds for 100 bloggers?
Here's a couple tunes from her new 3 song ep, Paris is Burning... (available from Good Records)

'100 CDs For 100 Bloggers' works better for a mid-level artist/band that has a following, and wants to move up to superstar status.
For an artist that's trying to establish their fanbase, like Annie, they just need exposure, and to get their music out there to people so they can hear what the deal is. IOW, exactly what you are doing here.

AND she's cute... dude, call her...
I like her music too: maybe Dallas doesn't suck after all?

Mack-
Annie actually does already have a pretty good following. She also plays guitar for the Polyphonic Spree, and played guitar and opened for Sufjan Stevens on his last European and West Coast tours. She's been making some big waves in the blogosphere already, as well as with the European press. She's also about to open for Stephen Malkmus and Jolie Holland.
Point is, she's already gotten people talking, and has a good sized fan base (especially for someone without a full length). But sometimes that happens, just look at the Arctic Monkeys. People are ready to talk about good music, regardless of where in the life cycle the band is. 100 cds for 100 bloggers would continue to feed a fire that has already begun burning...
And, Tim, she's smoking hot, and weird as shit, too. The perfect combo!

Dude... you should be chasing her. She's a musician, she's cute and she's weird? Shouldn't you two be dating? Do I have to start an online campaign?

LMAO! As usual Tim is here to keep our priorities straight...
Paul if there are 100 bloggers that are fans of Anne, then you could do it. But you'd need at least 100 to create enough buzz to reach that 'critical mass' where the buzz can become a meme, similar to what we saw with the 'Z-List'.
That was another reason why I love the 'Z-List', because the buzz it's created just further validates the ability of bloggers to take an idea and run with it and turn it into a viral phenomenon.
Again, if you can get a list together of 100 fans of Anne that are also bloggers, I'd say you're good to go!

Yes, I think that's a good idea. Do the online campaign, I will be forever shamed. :)
And, Mack, I don't think it would be too hard to find 100 bloggers who are fans, but I guess it also depends on what you consider to be a blogger. Does myspace count? There are some MySpace blogs with fairly heavy readership. She's already been a regular on gorilla vs. bear, which is one of the largest music blogs. I don't know, I think she'd probably have enough.
Either way, even if it was 5, 10 or 20, you never know who's reading, and just a few can multiply quickly, just like 100 could all fall flat. I guess it sort of depends on who those 100 are.
But, what'd you think Mack? You like her? :)

Get me a CD; I'm a blogger. I'll blog about it and her... you have my word.
I need your vital stats so I can start my campaign to get the two of you somehow attached.

Paul let me put it to you this way: Can you find 99 other bloggers that are just as passionate about seeing her succeed as you are? If the answer is yes, then you've got something huge. That's the reason why '100 CDs' would work, because you're basically targetting 100 evangelists for an artist.
And to be honest, I wasn't blown away by the music. She's obviously a great singer, but it's not the style I like. Then again I don't care much for Fiona either, and have fairly weird tastes in music.
BTW ever thought about featuring her music on an episode of BAMCast? Or on your own podcast? I've heard a rumor that promoting music via podcasts is about to take off ;)
Posted by: Mack Collier | January 01, 2007 at 01:46 PM
I don't think that'll be a problem. The blogs have already been buzzing like crazy for her, and she hasn't even released her first record yet.
And, what's a podcast? :)
Actually, we've been trying to get together that group podcast on BMA, and then there's the Dallas Marketing Zoo that's in it's infancy, too. I'm a little afraid of doing my own. It's seems tough to do, and very, very time consuming.
Ahh, well.
